Belen, Catarmarca, Argentina

I was at the house of Aurora, Ramón, Arturo, Malvina, Nico, Maria and Mamà vita (grandma 93 years old).

I had hitchhiked about 6 hours from Patquia to Belen. I was feeling down, lonely and unmotivated, wandering if I should continue hitchhiking or take a bus to Salta, where I plan to volunteer at an organization supporting malnourished children and their families. I decided to find a place to buy minutes on my prepaid cell phone to call the director of the volunteer organization in Salta. I knocked on the door of a home that offered this service. The mom, Aurora, approached me and told me they could not offer to put minutes on my phone, but invited me to eat lunch. I very happily accepted.

They have offered me to stay the night, we went for a hike and we and shared meals. It is amazing the kind of people you meet when you most need them. Thank you familia Marcial!

I am in contact now with CONIN in Salta. It is funny how things work out when you follow your heart, and it is a sure sign when things just fall into place with ease. Turns out Teresa, the director of volunteers, is passing through Belen tomorrow and will bring me to Salta.

Aurora invited me to attend a dance workout with about 150 other women. Apparently Argentinian men are too macho to dance. If only they knew they had the best odds here. We had a blast!

I thought this would make a nice picture. Funny thing is this girl has a smart phone in her hand. Technology...

  1. Looks like you've been busy, J! Always in awe of your adventurous spirit. I'll be in Colombia in May for a few weeks to volunteer. Let me know if you'll be around those parts!
